Phoenix Park Community Garden

Village Park Site Analysis

Located in the back Southwest corner of Phoenix Park is a community garden. Phoenix Community Garden had its first plantings in the Spring of 2005, making this a relatively young garden. Despite the early challenges of heavy clay soil, reproducing rocks, nut sedge, other hardy weeds, and poor drainage, the garden has produced many hundreds of pounds of vegetables, and herbs, as well as bunches upon bunches of beautiful flowers.

Excess produce is shared with the local VFW Post to help meet the needs of their members. Gardeners are free to grow whatever plants they choose with the exception of state listed noxious weeds, medical marijuana, and tall, shading shrubs or trees. The garden has 54 plots which are available on a first come first served basis to residents of Fair Oaks with a nominal annual maintenance fee.

There is a waiting list to which people who desire a garden plot can have their names added. The waiting times vary depending on the number of people on the waiting list and the rate of turnover among plot holders.
